Enlighten Learning Resource, Inc offers affordable screening and tutoring services for dyslexia, and provides parents and families with information, resources and support necessary to understand and address the challenges of dyslexia.  Our goal is to educate individuals about dyslexia challenges and dispel common myths about this prevalent learning disability.  We aim to help parents and family members develop the skills and motivation to be an active advocate for their dyslexic learner.  We help parents identify and advocate for an effective individual education plan and classroom accommodations, and seek to improve the working relationship between parents and school support teams.  We provide information workshops, enable parent networking groups, advise on improving organization skills, and connect parents with a wealth of information resources.

What tutoring method does Enlighten Learning Resource, Inc. use?

The International Dyslexia Association recommends an Orton-Gillingham based approach for teaching those with dyslexia to effectively read and spell.  Although there are several effective Orton-Gillingham platforms, our method of choice is the Barton Reading and Spelling system.  The Barton system is an explicit, systematic, multi-sensory method with specific benchmarks and proven results.  The approach lends itself to both rules and association based methods, and it is easy for students and parents to remember, build upon and consistently apply.

Does Enlighten Learning Resource provide virtual screening and tutoring?

Yes. Enlighten Learning Resource, Inc. offers both in person and virtual screening and tutoring services.

How long should it take for a student to progress through the Barton System?

The Barton System has 10 levels designed to provide students with effective reading and spelling techniques.  The time it takes for a student to progress through the entire Barton System will depend on a variety of factors, including age, grade, severity of dyslexia, and method/consistency of tutoring sessions.  A student with classic or moderate dyslexia who is tutored one-on-one twice a week for an hour each time, will take approximately 24 to 36 months to complete the Barton System.  Students who are tutored 3 times per week may achieve the same results in 18 to 24 months.  Early intervention plays a key role.  The earlier a dyslexic student receives intervention, the less time it should take to achieve and maintain grade level skills for reading and spelling.  Each case is unique, so ELR works to develop a customized schedule that best fits the needs of each student.  The goal is to ensure consistency in learning and practicing the skills necessary for ongoing effective reading and spelling skills.

Why do you recommend tutoring 2 to 3 times a week?
According to the International Dyslexia Association, approximately 20 to 50% of students with learning disabilities, including dyslexia, have deficits in working memory.  Working memory is the ability for individuals to retain and recall new information, and is essential for effective learning.  A weakness in working memory affects reading, writing, math, and the performance of daily tasks requiring multiple steps.  Specifically for reading, a weak working memory contributes to poor word decoding and encoding. Regular, ongoing, and consistent instruction helps strengthen this deficit. That is why experts recommend a minimum of 2 hours of one-on-one tutoring every week. This enables students to build upon the skills they learn in previous sessions, and minimizes the need to repeat previous content.

How much does tutoring and support services cost?

Dyslexia affects an estimated 20% of people in the United States, often ranging in severity from mild, moderate to severe.  It tends to coexist with other forms of learning disability and is the most common reason a student with average or higher intelligence struggles with spelling, reading, or writing.
